Manchester City’s Incredible Start to the Season – Wolves’ Match Preview

Date:

Coming into the season, it was clear that Pep Guardiola’s City side would be a threat once again. Their performances last year proved as much; the blue half of Manchester simply couldn’t deal with their dynamic brand of football at times. Now, though, they’re coming into the new campaign after a record-breaking title win and a Carabao Cup final defeat. Guardiola will know that his squad cannot afford to ease up for even a single game; anything but their A-game could mean another trophyless season for City fans. The early signs are positive for the Citizens, though. They have made an incredible start to the campaign, winning all four matches so far. Will this be another successful season for City? Let’s take a closer look at their exploits so far…

Record-breaking Start to the Season

This is Pep Guardiola’s first full Premier League season at the helm of Man City and the early signs are very positive. They have made a record-breaking start to the season, winning all four matches and scoring thirteen goals. This includes a 6-bright victory against the newly promoted Wolves at home – their biggest ever win at the Etihad Stadium. They have also kept three clean sheets, meaning they’ve conceded just one goal in four matches. Guardiola has often been praised for his tactical nous and meticulous attention to detail. He appears to have made a number of changes since the end of last season, which have seen his side make a very strong start to the new campaign.

Wolves vs Man City

This is the third match between Wolves and Man City in the last 18 months, with Pep’s side winning the previous two. City beat Wolves 2-0 away back in May, before repeating the scoreline in the Carabao Cup Final in March. Wolves will be hoping for a change in fortunes this time around, although they are yet to make their mark on the Premier League after two draws and a defeat. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side made a strong start to life in the top flight but was edged out by Spurs in their first ever Premier League match.

They were also unfortunate to lose against Chelsea, with both goals coming from disputed penalties. Wolves vs Man City is expected to be a very open affair, with both sides in good form. The city has won four of its opening four matches, scoring 13 goals and keeping three clean sheets. Wolves, meanwhile, have drawn two and lost one of their first four matches, scoring four goals and conceding five. It’s a tough start for both sides, but this match should be a fantastic spectacle.

An Outstanding Performances from Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling is often criticized for not living up to his £100,000-per-week wage packet but the England international has been in excellent form so far this season. He has scored three times and assisted once in the Premier League so far, also finding the net in the Carabao Cup win over Burton Albion. “He's an incredible player, he's an example for everybody,” Guardiola said in his pre-match press conference ahead of Wolves vs Man City. “He's so consistent and he's a joy to be with every day.

I'm so happy to have him. He's such a nice guy and a good player too.” “I'm delighted with him,” added the City manager. “He's one of the guys who is committed to the process and the way we want to play and his performance is excellent.” The city is expected to come out on top at home against Wolves, and Sterling could be the difference maker.

Changes in Formation

The city has suffered a few injuries in the early weeks of the season, with Benjamin Mendy and Fabian Delph both unavailable for selection. Mendy is expected to return to the squad in the near future, but Delph looks set to miss out on a place in the starting XI. Guardiola has also made changes to his favored formation, switching from a 4-3-3 to a 4-2-3-1. The change has seen a few of his star players asked to do a little more in the middle of the park, but Guardiola is a man who likes to have the final word when it comes to tactics. The City manager recently explained that he was forced to make changes due to a combination of injuries and poor performances in games against Wolves, Liverpool, and Leicester.

Why Pep Chose this Starting XI

It’s hard to know for sure, but it seems likely that the injuries to Mendy and Delph played a part in the decision to change formation. With both players expected to be out for another few weeks, Guardiola opted for a formation that could see his side continue to play beautiful, attacking football. This would allow all of his creative players – such as Bernardo Silva, Sterling, and Sergio Aguero – to be given more freedom further up the pitch. This injury crisis, combined with the poor performances against Wolves, Liverpool and Leicester, has seen a few tweaks in Guardiola’s tactics since the start of the season.

Man City’s Key Players so far

There have been a few stand-out players for City so far this season, but two of them, in particular, could prove to be crucial in the title race. Goalkeeper Ederson has been in brilliant form, making a number of world-class saves to keep his team in matches. He has almost single-handedly kept them in games against Liverpool and Leicester, making a remarkable 14 saves in the two matches combined. Benjamin Mendy has been one of City’s most important players in the early parts of the season, despite not even being available for selection. His absence has seen City play with a different formation and adopt a different style of play.

Final Words

It’s still very early in the season but, with a record-breaking start to the campaign, City has given themselves a great chance of a successful season. They have made a few tweaks to their game, which suggests that Guardiola is aware that the squad needs to be managed carefully. With a number of important players currently out of action, the City manager has been forced to make a number of changes to his starting XI. The early signs are positive, though. If City can stay healthy and play to the best of their abilities, they have a great chance at lifting more silverware this season.
