However, some scholars believe that there were more eras of the rule before the Xia – the “Tang” and the “Yu” dynasty.

In ancient China, Chinese dynasties fought over their political legitimacy, a claim derived from the doctrine of the Mandate of Heaven. The Han dynasty, which ruled from 220 to 265 AD, often proclaimed rival dynasties illegitimate, thus justifying their position as the true heirs of the Chinese culture. These conflicts are still debated, but historians tend to agree that they were the legitimate dynasties in the country.
